Hyderabad: A mock drill was conducted by the police in Mahatma Gandhi Bus Stations by deploying trained sniffer dogs. They recently completed eight month-long training and are ready to join duties.

According to the trainers, the canines are called the 17th batch. A total 71 dogs underwent training at the Intelligence Integrated Training Academy (IITA) near Moinabad in Ranga Reddy district. The trainers said that the dogs had been given training for eight months in four categories which included detecting explosives, narcotics, assault and tracking.

The dogs would take part in the passing out parade either on February 15 or 16 and after that they would be ready to assume their duties, the trainer said. He said that the dogs were trained not to bark on seeing the explosives since the sensors some time would explode on the sound of barking. Now, they would sit calmly whenever they notice an explosive device without barking, said the trainer.

The dogs would also be sent to other states, if request for their deployment was made, said the officials. As the dogs were taken around the MGBS, the passengers in the station were awestruck and took photographs of them.
