Two firemen from Telangana awarded with fire service medal for gallantry

On the eve of Republic Day, two firemen were awarded the fire service medal for gallantry in Telangana.

Both Firemen, Thirjasi Satyam and Sunku Jagadesh are from the Telangana State Disaster Response and Fire Services Department who showed commendable courage in rescue operations.

Every year, six firemen from the country are awarded the fire service medal for gallantry.

Apart from the two firemen from Telangana, the other four awardees are Akshay Ranjan Sharma, Ajay Kumar Sharma, Sitab Singh, and Ramgopal Singh. All of them are from Uttar Pradesh.

Thirjasi Satyam, who works at the Warangal fire station displayed immense courage during a mishap caused by a gas cylinder explosion on October 16 last year at the Rohini Super Speciality Hospital in Hanamkonda.  

With the two floors fogged in smoke, Satyam broke the glass window and entered the inferno, managing to save 20 patients. In the 45-minute search and rescue operation, the fire department’s efforts saved many lives, however, failed to save two lives as well in the mishap.

Satyam’s feat earned him the highest level of appreciation at the Department.

On the other hand, 28-year-old Jagadesh, working at Cherlapally fire station in Medchal district showed a presence of mind on September 14, 2017, at a Hindustan Petroleum LPG gas filling unit.

A massive explosion took place after 40 cylinders exploded setting off the unit on a blaze. The four-member team including Jagadesh responded to the emergency call participated in the firefighting which lasted four hours.

Jagadesh and his team worked till 4 am to douse the fire.
