OU to hosts 36th annual general meeting of the Astronomical Society of India

Hyderabad : The 36th Annual General Meeting of the Astronomical Society of India (ASI) will be inaugurated by Osmania University Vice-Chancellor Prof. S. Ramachandram at the IICT auditorium.

Announcing this at a press conference, ASI Secretary Prof. Dipankar Banerjee said that the  event to be held  from 5-9 February on Osmania University campus, will be attended by 400 scientists,  young faculty, researchers and students from across the country and abroad. Also, 100 talks will be delivered on diverse topics related to Astronomy and also on current and future research.

As part of its outreach programme, the ASI had conducted an awareness/sensitization programme for Government school teachers. It has planned a career counseling session is to be organized at Aurora College on 7 February. The session aims to educate Science and Engineering students on career opportunities in Astronomy.

Giving further details, Prof. Banerjee added that an exhibition of 170 posters will be held at the PGRRCDE, OU to showcase the status of Astronomy and research in India and also another set of 100 posters will be available for public display across 10 schools in the city.

Prof. Dipankar revealed that ASI was established in 1972, followed by the first conference in 1974 at OU under the Secretaryship of Professor Abhayankar, the then Head of Astronomy Department, OU.  This is the fourth time the University is conducting the event, this time, as a part of the Centenary celebrations.
