Hyderabad: The officials of Prohibition and Excise Department (Ranga Reddy Zone) on Monday seized 30 Fortwin (Pentazocine Lactate) injections from a resident of Venkataka Ramana Colony in Serilingampally.

According to Excise officials, Y Sunil Dev had stored Fortwin, which can be used as drugs. The officials acting on a tip-off conducted a raid at his residence and found the injections, which are prohibited and could only be sold under licence, were smuggled from Vijayawada.

Fortwin injection contains Pentazocine chemical, a psychotropic substance. It is analgesic, used as pain killer after surgical operations. It is available only with hospitals and medical shops having Narcotic licence and it cannot be given to individuals even on prescription.

Only hospitals having narcotic licence can obtain ampoules from medical distributors. Further doctors need to preserve empty ampoules. “Pentazocine injection can only be sold by hospitals or medical shops, which have the licence of Narcotics. The usage is strictly administered by a medical surgeon and the usage should be recorded in a register,” said the officials.

The officials believe that now it is being imported illegally from Tirupathi, Vijayawada, Vizag, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. Long term use of it will cause hepatitis disease, shortens life span.
