Koti Women’s College to become university
Hyderabad: The historic Koti Women's College will be upgraded into Telangana Women's University. Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari, making an announcement to this effect on Thursday, said that the Koti Women's College in the city has all necessary facilities for it to be upgraded to a university.
Srihari, who made a surprise visit to the college on Thursday, inspected the facilities in the college and enquired with the students on the teaching and other facilities in the campus.Later, speaking to media persons, he said that steps will be taken to commence classes of the Telangana State Women's University (TSWU) after taking approval from Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao.
Earlier, the minister went around the campus and inspected the buildings in the 40-acre campus and appreciated the existing facilities in the college. The campus has suitable environs for students who not only come from all the 31 districts in the state but also from other countries.
He said that the United AP had Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam at Tirupati. But, after the bifurcation, it has gone to Andhra Pradesh. It was against this backdrop that the issue was brought to the notice of the Union Minister of HRD Prakash Javadekar, during his recent meeting with him at Delhi. According to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, the Centre had to sanction a women's university to the state.
After inspecting the campus, he said, the Koti Women's College has been identified as it has all necessary infrastructure. Srihari said the issues would be taken to the notice of the Chief Minister to get his approval and try to start the TSWU classes from the ensuing academic year.
The Deputy Chief Minister directed senior officials of the education department to prepare a report, within a month, on the existing facilities in the college and additional facilities needed to start the university.
He said that at present the college was offering 42 undergraduate and postgraduate courses without research facilities. When it becomes a university, it would be possible to take up research activity, he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister said Rs 200 crore had been allocated to Osmania University on the occasion of its centenary celebrations and Rs 37 crore had been set apart for the Koti Women's College, which is affiliated to OU. Currently, repairs were being undertaken to the buildings in the campus. Steps will be taken to create more
facilities, he assured.
