Secunderabad Railway Station awarded third prize for beautification on Indian Railways
Hyderabad : Secunderabad Railway Station has made its mark once again on Indian Railways. The Ministry of Railways has awarded the station, Third Prize on the entire Indian Railways, for beautification of its premises with attractive local art. The Rail Ministry had invited nominations for Stations where beautification has been done with participation of local artists.
The evaluation committee set up to review 62 entries received from 11 Zonal Railways, adjudged Secunderabad Railway Station as the Third Prize winning Station, while the First Prize went to Balharshah and Chandrapur and Second Prize to Madhubani and Madurai. Gandhidham and Kota shared the Third Prize with Secunderabad.
Secunderabad Station has taken on a new look, which is steeped in the rich traditions of Cheriyal Scroll Paintings. Deriving its lineage from Cheriyal village near Warangal, Telangana centuries ago, this art form has been languishing of late. It is a humble Endeavour of South Central Railway to bring this jewel of the past in the midst of public limelight. These exquisite paintings welcome passengers at the two entrances to the station, and adorn walls at the platform as well as waiting hall.
Various themes are painted in vivid hues with mostly primary colours, showing a predominance of red colour in the background. The costumes and settings provide an authentic glimpse of the rich culture of Telangana. The rural element renders it an aura of exclusivity and charm.
