Murder of democracy in Karnataka: Shabbir

Hyderabad: Leader of the Opposition in Telangana Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir on Wednesday held the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi responsible for the “murder of democracy” in Karnataka, misuse of the office of Governor and split of secular votes besides resorting to horse-trading.

Shabbir charged the BJP with pressurising Governor Vajubhai Vala to accept the claim of BJP leader BS Yeddyurappa to form a government in the State in spite of his party not being winning required numbers for the majority in the Assembly and also for rejecting the genuine claims of the JD(S) and Congress combine to form the government.

Shabbir said the Governor should have followed the precedent set by the BJP in Bihar, Meghalaya, Manipur and Goa where some parties aligned with BJP were invited to form governments. In those States, claims of the Congress or the RJD of Lalu Prasad Yadav, the single largest parties were rejected.

But in Karnataka, Governor Vajubhai Vala has invited the BJP with 104-member strength to form the government and rejected the claim of the JD(S) and Congress parties, which displayed their MLAs strength of 116 (78 Congresses and 38 JD(S)).

Shabbir Ali accused the BJP of murdering democracy and setting a bad precedent of encouraging horse-trading and resorting to misuse of office of the Governor.
