GHMC to pilot with electric vehicles for garbage disposal
Hyderabad : After the recent announcement by Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K. T. Rama Rao that electric vehicles will be introduced to replace the diesel-trucks presently used for garbage collection in GHMC, the corporation has ordered electric autos from Hyderabad based Gayam Motor Works (GMW).
“This fleet of electric vehicles communicates real-time status. GHMC’s waste management system can now be monitored from a single location by our officials. This will improve per vehicle productivity, reduce non- compliance, eliminate manual tracking for monitoring and escalation. Communities benefit from optimized operations, beautified public spaces & reduced carbon footprint,” said GHMC Commissioner Dr. B. Janardhan Reddy.
“With Telangana on its way to becoming a power surplus state with the construction of new plants to generate additional 13,752 megawatts last year, adopting electric vehicles by state government organizations will result in effective utilization of power. GHMC is continuing to lead by example by introducing our electric autos for garbage pickup and disposal applications,” he said.
GMW’s electric auto is home grown Hyderabad based electric auto manufacturing company. The company is first in India to produce a Li-Ion battery based electric three-wheeler. The vehicle can be charged in 3 hours, offers a range of 110 km/charge and can take a load of 800Kg. GMW’s e-vehicles are currently being used by BigBasket, Gati, Flipkart, Delhivery, and several other logistics companies for last mile deliveries.
As many as 22 of top 50 polluted cities across the globe are located in India. Each diesel auto replaced will reduce about 35 tons of carbon emissions over 5 years. Around 20,00,000 tons of carbon emissions can be reduced by replacing existing municipal disposal vehicles with electric vehicles within GHMC limits. While the running cost of a diesel vehicle is Rs 3/km, the running cost of GMW’s electric auto is as low as Rs 0.50/km. The maintenance cost of an electric auto is also very minimal as there are fewer moving parts.
