Mahbubngar: A team of doctors saved the life of a premature low weight baby at Ravi Children’s Hospital in Mahbubnagar district on Thursday.  Going into the details, wife of Sajeeva from Ankilla village of Koilkonda mandal in Mahbubngar district had given birth to a premature baby of just 800 gram.

The doctors at the Kavita Reddy Hospital, where the baby was first delivered, gave up hope and said the baby would not survive and suggested the parents to try their luck by taking the baby to Nilofer Hospital in Hyderabad.

Sanjeeva was heartbroken, because earlier his wife had 4 abortions due to premature foetus and this time in the fifth attempt also the baby was found to be of low weight and was facing problems in breathing and was not feeding due to lack of proper development of vital organs like brain, lungs and kidneys.

The parents also tried to take the baby to various other hospitals like Vivekandand Hospital and other prominent Shusrutha hospital, but the doctors refused to admit the baby because they were sure she would not survive. However, after learning about Ravi Children’s Hospital, Sanjeeva wanted to try his luck here and admitted the baby in the hospital.

The experienced team of doctors at Ravi hospital after careful study of the baby’s condition had decided to create an artificial incubation for the baby which would ensure womb like environment so that the baby gets all necessary nutrients, vitamins and medicines from outside and was fully closed with no exposure to outside atmosphere.

The baby was kept in the incubation container for about 30 days and it gradually gained weight and after 30 days the parameters of her body like pulse, blood pressure, heart rate, respiration etc, became normal. Then slowly the doctors removed the ventilator and other vital instruments supporting the baby and after 50 days in hospital the baby could gain 1 kilogram weight and fully recovered.

“When we admitted the baby, the condition was very serious had the parents brought her another half an hour late she would have been dead. Soon after studying her past case studies and diagnostic reports we carried out various tests on the baby and found that her brain was not giving proper signals for her vital organs to respond as done in normal babies.

As the baby was born in just 7 months without fulfilling 36 weeks, we decided to create a womb like condition outside tried to give support to her vital organs with ventilator and other machinery.

We also diagnosed the baby with severe jaundice and her respiratory organs were also not responding. Keeping all that in mind we decided to give unique medical treatment and finally succeeded in saving the life of the little one,” explained Dr. Sekhar.

After removing from ventilator, the doctors advised the child’s mother the care technique which is a unique way of providing natural treatment to the baby by bonding the baby with her mother.

Using this technique, it will help enable the baby to gain weight more quickly and keep her away from diseases in addition to getting the required warmth of the mother.  “KMC is quite useful medical technique particularly for those babies which are born premature and with low weight.

Both mother and father can give this natural care treatment as it is more effective due to its ability of creating an environment of warmth for the baby,” said Dr. V. Sekhar, medical director of Ravi Children’s hospital. Sanjeeva is a jubilant dad now, as he had finally saved his lone son from the clutches of death. He profusely thanked the doctors’ team and the hospital staff. “The doctors had really worked very hard to save my little child,” said Sanjeeva.
