Upsurge in admissions into govt schools

Warangal: Contrary to the prevailing trend of parents opting for private schools over government for their children’s education, the government schools in Warangal witnessed a rise in admissions for the current academic year.

Interestingly, a government school in Warangal displayed a notice stating that admissions are closed for the current academic year as the student strength reached maximum limit. Such practice is often seen among private schools and is uncommon in government schools.

But one such notice was put up on the gate of Government High School at Karimabad in Warangal. The response from parents is such that as many as 90 students sought admission in a single day on June 2. “This took place even before we conducted Badi Bata programme, which was held from June 4 to June 8,” said headmaster R Upakar Reddy, on Tuesday.

The current strength of the high school (6 to 10 classes), which offers both English and Telugu medium education, is 524. Of the total strength, 439 students are in English medium while 85 joined Telugu medium. In standard six alone, there are 126 new admissions of the total 180 new admissions this year.

“Since we reached 439 strength limit in English medium we stopped new admissions and admissions into Telugu medium are open. Parents’ response indicates a changing mindset over the quality of education we offer at our school. One of the students scored 9.5 GPA in SSC,” Upakar Reddy told The Hans India.

“The staff at the school feels fortunate to serve the needs of students who come from below poverty line families,” the headmaster said. There is a need of another four teachers to handle the strength of the high school as per government norms, he added.

Government High School at Narendra Nagar (Gudibadi School) in Warangal also received similar response from parents. The school recorded 240 new admissions this year in high school classes and the total strength of the high school is 765.

Admissions into first and second classes may be closed as the strength reached maximum limit, said school headmaster T Kumaraswamy. “Our school’s excellent academic track record is attracting parents, in the last SSC exams one of the students scored 10/10 GPA and many scored above 9 GPA,” he added.

In a similar manner, a Government High School at Rangashaipet in Warangal also recorded about 105 new admissions into 6 to 10 classes in English medium. “We are expecting another 30 new admissions,” headmaster Y Narasimha Reddy said.
