Kommala ZPHS students win accolades from all

Warangal: Mathematics is often considered a tough subject and many desires to keep it away as much as possible. But a group of students of Zilla Parishad High School (ZPHS), Kommala in Geesukonda mandal of Warangal Rural district are creating record of sorts with their amazing mathematical prowess as well as a mesmerising memory power.

Some of the students can read non-terminating non-recurring decimal value of ‘Pi’, also called Archimedes' constant, up to 100 digits, some 500, some 1,000 and a student can read up to 2,000 digits by heart.

This has become possible with persistent hard work by a mathematics teacher, Dommati Bikshapathi and equally committed efforts by the students to excel. Such efforts have now earned fame for the teacher as well as the students.

The students entered into Math Genius World Records Book in 2017, received certificate of appreciation from the district administration and their teacher ‘Best Teacher Award’ at Telangana Formation Day celebrations on June 2, this year. Bikshapathi also received Ganitha Jyothi Award from Ganitha Samajam.

The students and their teacher have won accolades from Deputy Chief Minister K Sihari, District Collector M Haritha and many others. ‘It began last year with one student V Ganesh, who after months of intensive training, read 500 digits and now can read 2,000 digits without a break,’ said
the teacher.

Sharing how he managed to train the students, Bikshapathi, who received ATA (Award Teacher's Association) National Award in 2017, told The Hans India that after initial success 24 more students are roped in for the training, daily spending about six hours in practice and they can read 100 digits in unison.

A student V Vennela can read 700 digits in Telugu and English, while a student L Divya can tell 500 digits of pi in just 60 seconds. A student B Mamatha can tell 500 digits of pi in 90 seconds and Ch Prshanth in 50 seconds, he explained.

“The training is aimed to create interest in mathematics and help the students excel in studies. The memory retention exercise improves their IQ, subsequently it helps them grasp other subjects easily,” Bikshapathi noted.

Now the students are in a predicament as he is going to be transferred to another school as part of the ongoing teacher transfers and do not want to let their teacher go away. “We want our sir to continue here as he is our role model and made us worthy,” Ganesh and Vennela said in tears.
