GHMC to rope in SHGs to fight plastic scourge

Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is planning to involve women Self Help Groups (SHGs) in the production of cloth and jute bags in order to curb the growing use of plastic bags in the city. 

GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy held a meeting with the members of the SHGs and discussed the promotion of production of cloth and jute bags. The official said that the GHMC had identified 68 women SHGs to take up this project. 

During the due course of the project, the officials will impart training to the women on stitching bags and also provide loans through banks for taking up the project which will be helpful to them for their livelihood and help the corporation curb plastic menace.  

The Commissioner stated that the UCD wing is preparing an action plan for marketing of the cloth and jute bags and future course of action for better implementation of project. Reddy said that the banks are also ready to come forward and sanction loans to the SHGs. The official said that one crore plastic bags were being used per day in the corporation. 

GHMC Additional Commissioners Sruthi Ojha, Siktha Patnaik and Bhaskara Chary and banks managers from Ranga Reddy and Medchal Districts were also present.
