Congress wants 54% quota for BCs in PR polls, not 34%: Sravan
Hyderabad : Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) Chief Spokesperson Dr. Dasoju Sravan has alleged that Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao was trying to deprive 54% reservation for Backward Classes in Panchayat Raj elections.
Responding to the allegations made by the Chief Minister in a statement today, Sravan said that he had filed a petition before the High Court seeking 54% reservation for BCs while the TRS Government wants to confine the reservation to just 34%. Therefore, he said that the Chief Minister made a false and misleading statement accusing the Congress party of obstructing 34% reservation for BCs given under new Panchayat Raj Act. Further, he said that KCR was wrongly trying to link Sarpanch V. Swapna Reddy, of Kosanipet, Andole mandal of Sangareddy district, who approached the High Court against crossing of 50% reservation ceiling in Panchayat Raj elections, with the Congress party.
Sravan said that he had approached the High Court on the contention that the Intensive Household Survey (IHS) conducted by the State Government had estimated the BC population to be 52%. However, the government proposed only 34% reservation for BCs in Panchayat Raj election. Further, he said he had demanded categorisation in BC reservation. Therefore, he said that the High Court had directed the government not to go ahead with the elections unless it conducts enumeration of BC voters.
He challenged KCR to implement 54% reservation for BCs in Panchayat Raj if he was sincere towards the Backward Classes. He said that the Chief Minister need not go to Supreme Court and he could decide the matter using his prerogative powers.
Sravan said that KCR has become habitual of blaming the Congress party to cover up his failures and ill-intentions. He said that the Congress party would agree only for 54% reservations for BCs and not 34% which KCR is trying to impose through backdoor methods.
