Mahbubnagar: Stressing that police should act tough against those involved in the SC/ST atrocity cases, Dr. Yerrolla Srinivas, chairman for SC and ST Commission, government of Telangana, said that usually police try to resolve the issues by compromise. However, if they come across any SC/ST related cases it is their duty to take immediate steps to ensure that the culprits do not escape the law and must see that the victims must get justice.

While taking part in a programme Dr. Yerrola Srinivas said, “During the past 14 years since 2004 to 2018, there have been 6000 SC/ST cases pending in Telangana. However soon after formation of Telangana and setting up of SC/ST Commission we have compensated more than 5000 cases in just 15 days after formation and more than 90 per cent cases have been resolved in the state.,” informed the Commission Chairman.

He observed that the district of Gadwal had the major chunk of SC/ST atrocity cases booked in the entire State. Soon after formation of the commission, the government had compensated to a tune of Rs. 1.95 crore which is the highest compensation paid to any district in the state.

“We have been seeing in various cases that the police try to resolve the issues by compromising. But if it is a SC/ST atrocity related case, the police must take initiative to immediately book cases against the culprits and do not give chance for compromise settlement. This will give wrong signals and the real purpose of the SC/ST atrocity act will be diluted,” observed the Chairman.

An awareness programme was conducted for the police officials on the SC,ST laws and other legal issues relating to the rights of SCs and STs. The Chairman expressed happiness that every month 30th the last day is being celebrated as Human Right’s day and review meetings are being conducted regularly which is a good sign that atrocities cases are regularly monitored and justice is being provided to those who are victimised.
