Telangana meets all-time peak power demand
Hyderabad: Telangana on Tuesday has met the peak demand of 10,429 MWs by surpassing the earlier peak demand of 10,284 MW on March 8, 2018. The demand during the formation of Telangana was 6,660 MWs on March 23, 2014.
Addressing a press conference here, Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy said that it was all-time peak demand. Within a span of four years, the government had ensured power production increased from 7,000 MWs to 14,000 MWs, which shows the development of the State was undergoing. Stating that demand is expected to increase further during this Kharif season, Reddy said that Telangana State DISCOMs were prepared to meet even 11,500 MWs peak demand or more.
“Some leaders asked what will happen with separate Telangana. Our Chief Minister has been saying since 2001 that we will have golden future if we rule ourselves and the development proves his words right,” said Reddy. Though the Chief Minister sought one year’s time, but he provided 24-hours electricity in only six months, he said.
The Minister said that Telangana was the only State to provide 24-hour power supply to every sector. “We are ready even for a demand of 11,000 MWs during the coming days,” he said. TRANSCO CMD D Prabhakar Rao said that the power was being provided to agriculture (30 per cent), industrial (30 per cent) and domestic (30 per cent) sectors. He said that the government was purchasing 1,000 MWs of power and corridor has also been constructed.
He said that they have written to the ERC (Electricity Regulation Commission) for decreasing power charges. The power purchases would be made based on the situation. The officials said that the 4,000 MW of Yadadri would be commissioned in 2020-21, apart from 800 MW of Singareni Collieries new unit, 2,000 MW of Solar to meet the growth in future in the State. Telangana is one of the largest producers of solar energy in the country. So far, 3,401 MW of solar has been added to the grid.
