Monsoon plays spoilsport
Hyderabad/Visakhapatnam: Flash floods, heavy rains at some places, less rain and no rain at all other places. This is the new form of the southwest monsoon that had set over the two Telugu states. The low-pressure areas forming over Bay of Bengal are not triggering rains.
Normally, during the southwest monsoon except a very few places, the entire south India receives good rains. However, during the present season, the situation is different in various states.
In Telangana, Hyderabad has not received much rain, but rural Telangana did, particularly Khammam. In AP, Krishna, Guntur, twin Godavari districts have received rains, but other districts had no rain at all. The situation is much worse in Anantapur, Chittoor, Kadapa, and Kurnool of the Rayalaseema region. They are yet to receive any rains. Except a few places, there are no rains in north coastal districts either.
“There is no specific reason for this uneven distribution of rainfall. In fact, by middle of August, all the southern parts are supposed to receive normal rainfall. However, several parts are still in rainfall deficit stage while in other areas there is downpour.
“During monsoon season, low pressure areas develop, inducing rain, but during the last one-and-a-half month, the low-pressure areas have not produced any rain but they were responsible for downpour in north, particularly in UP, Delhi, Maharashtra and Bihar,” a senior scientist of IMD told The Hans India.
He says tampering with environment has disturbed the monsoon cycle not only in AP but also in other parts of the world. The SW monsoon was very weak in the first two months, but it is slowly becoming active, raising hopes in areas where rainfall is yet to be received, the scientist said.
