Manakuragayalu comes to the rescue of vegetable farmers

Hyderabad: The Telangana government’s another innovative measure to help farmers lead a life of dignity was taking up Manakuragayalu project on pilot basis. The project’s main aim was to open a direct marketing channel for farmers. The project works as an extension to Rythu Bazaar concept for linking farmers to markets and help them sell their produce with a shortened supply chain.

The project also facilitates farmers get remunerative prices besides providing fresh vegetables at affordable prices to urban consumers thereby containing the prices and inflation, a market department official said. This way, Manakuragayalu project is expected to provide price security to farmers and price stabilisation to consumers. So far, 2 lakh quintals of vegetables have been sold through the initiative and Rs 18 crore has been credited to the bank accounts of approximately 78,000 active farmers. 

The official said that under this initiative, 23 collection centres at various locations (in five districts) were opened and 60 retail outlets has been opened in twin cities for the supply of fresh vegetables and fruits. This project envisages to open collection centres at various locations in the State and about 100 retail outlets in various formats in twin cities in near future. 

The department has established a Rythu market at Pragnapur under AMC Gajwel, which is specially constructed for women farmers and to the commuters of Karimnagar highway. This Rythu market is functioning successfully, and more number of women farmers and commuters in that area were benefitted. Further, the department has also identified another location for establishment of Rythu market  at Allapur toll gate, Toopran mandal under AMC, Vantimamidi, sources said.
