Heavy downpour stalls Kaleshwaram works

Hyderabad: Works for the State government’s prestigious Kaleshwaram project were stalled due to the heavy rains lashing the State for the last three days. Higher officials are constantly supervising the situation at Kaleshwaram project, which is being constructed in Mahadevpur Mandal in Jayashankar Bhupalapally district.

The officials have been taking precautionary measures as the huge water currents are gushing out as they lifted the gates of Ellampally project. The Engineering and the police officials are on high alert at the first barrage in Annaram and the second barrage in Medigadda of Kaleshwaram project as the water flow is severe. 

The area of barrage soaked in the water and the officials shifted the workers and equipment to safe place. The officials ensured that no untoward incident took place by initiating necessary precautionary measures. Kaleshwaram project Chief Engineer Nalla Venkateshwarlu is supervising at field level. Works at Medigadda and Annaram barrage and the gravity canal were stalled. 

The officials are afraid as the copper dam constructed on Medigadda barrage is on the verge of danger due to severe flood current. Meanwhile, Finance Minister Eatala Rajender on Friday said Karimnagar would get the first benefits from the prestigious Kaleshwaram project. 

Due to heavy rains for a few days, the combined district of Karimnagar would get sufficient waters for drinking as well as for irrigation purposes for two years, the Finance Minister said. Talking to press persons in Karimnagar after a review on rains and floods with Collector Sarfaraz Ahmed along with ZP Chairperson T Uma and MLA Rasamayi Balakishan, Rajender said the old district had been receiving abundant rainfall for a few days. 

Though there was no report of loss of life, assets and animals due to rains, 100 tmc ft water had gone waste at Medigadda, he observed. The State government was developing Karimnagar district like never before, he said. Rajender also said that erstwhile Karimnagar remained a seed bowl of Telangana.
