‘Develop spirit of enquiry’
Hanamkonda: On ‘Scientific Temper Day’, led by Prof D Prabhakara Chary, Jana Vignana Vedika (JVV) of Warangal Urban district committee organised a seminar on ‘Modern Science Relevance of Scientific Temper among Intelligentsia’ at Kakatiya University campus here
on Tuesday.
Head of the department of Zoology Prof E Narayana, the chief guest at the seminar, said despite enjoying the latest technological devices, people are unable to leave superstitions. He appealed the intellectuals to develop scientific temper among common men by encouraging them to question, observe physical reality, test, hypothesize, analyse and to communicate by involving logical applications.
The guest speaker, Prof A Ramachandraiah of NIT Warangal, explained the significance of National Scientific Temper Day. All India Peoples Science Network (AIPSN), New Delhi declared the Scientific Temper Day on August 20, in the honour of Dr Narendra Dabholkar, anti-superstition campaigner and champion of scientific temper, who was killed on this day in 2013, he said.
Dr Narendra Dabholkar introduced a slogan 'Ask Why' to inculcate scientific temper among the people in India. To develop scientific temper and humanity, people should have the spirit of inquiry. One is free to believe anything he or she wants, as long as they remain personal.
The problem starts when they start assigning scientific attributes to these beliefs, it is particularly dangerous when someone in a position of importance makes such claims. It does more harm to the history of science, he added.
Saying that we live in a society that is completely dependent on science and technology, JVV Warangal district unit president Prof D Prabhakara Chary said if you do not have a scientific temper and mind to understand technology, the latest technology might seem like magic, which is not healthy for the upcoming generations.
JVV general secretary D Satyaprakash, convener and State committee member KB Dharma Prakash, vice-president Dr M Ramulu, Dr Ajay Kumar, Ganesh, students and others were present at the programme.
