World Folklore Day observed

Khammam: District Folk Artiste Association members observed the World Folklore Day on a grand scale here on Wednesday. The celebrations are marked by music and dance events.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice-president of the Association A Krupanandham said the World Folklore Day is celebrated to highlight the importance of the folk art forms and culture and to create awareness among the public about their importance.

Khammam is enriched with several ancient folk art forms like Kolatam, Chekka bajana, Harikatha. Oggu katha, Burra kadha, Chindu yaksha ganam and Tholu bommalata. Several artistes are proving their talent in various folk art forms, he added.

By establishing special Department of language and Culture, the State government issued bus passes and health cards to several folk artistes and the special recognition given by the government helped folk artists earn their livelihood, he said.

He also thanked Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao for providing employment opportunities for the women folk artistes those who participated in in separate Telangana movement.   

Representatives of the District Folk Artistes Association B Ramana, Mondhugu Govind, K. Mahesh, Ashok, B. Ragothamand Koti were present at the programme.
