Government, Maxcure Hospitals hold organ transplant coordinator training programme
Hyderabad: Jeevandan – Cadaver transplantation programme by Government of Telangana in association with MaxCure Hospitals has conducted an Organ Transplant Coordinator training programme at Best Western Ashoka Hotel on Thursday. The programme was aimed at training the transplant coordinators from identifying potential organ donors and managing the whole donation process from brain dead to transplantation.
The process of organ donation and procurement include determination of brain dead; obtaining consent from relatives of patient for organ donation; donor management: organ retrieval, preparation, preservation, packaging and final transport to the hospital by coordinating with the organ harvesting team and Organ transplantation team. Every year more than 2 lakh patients die in India due to end stage organ failure. There is a need to create awareness about Organ Donation.
Organ transplant coordinators act as the bridge between organ donation motivation and allotment of organ to recipients. Jeevandan was started in 2011 and transplant coordinator training programme was started in 2015.

The total recipients 5,444 including liver 2,382 patients and kidney – 2,948 patients Organs donations till now 540 nos; donated Kidneys – 876; donated liver – 511; donated heart – 75; Heart valves 170; Eye – 473; lungs-12; pancreas – 9.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Swarnalatha, Jeevandan incharge, said, “We are glad to hold this programme in association with MaxCure Hospitals. The main aim of this program is to enlighten the coordinators about their role. Transplant coordinators position themselves between patient and relatives on one hand and treating doctor's team and cadaver transplantation team on the other hand.”
