Was it right for KCR to quote EC on early polls?
Hyderabad: Did the caretaker Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao commit impropriety by claiming that the Election Commission has indicated to him that elections to Telangana would be held along with Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Mizoram and that the new government can be in office by December?
KCR made this statement at a press conference on Thursday soon after dissolution of the state Assembly. He said he had decided to seek dissolution of Assembly only after undertaking a detailed exercise and getting clear indication that polls would be held along with other four states.
This claim of KCR has led to new controversy and opposition parties are now up in arms saying that this amounts to impropriety. The Election Commission cannot and does not give any such indication to any Chief Minister or even the Central Government, they said. Speculations were also making rounds in political circles that the Centre may change the Governor.
The claim of KCR that Election Commission has indicated that polls will be held in November has even come as a surprise to the BJP in New Delhi. According to sources, such assurances are never given by the EC.
The Supreme Court and Election Commission, a BJP leader said, have not only been functioning independently but are also exhibiting their independence. Political circles in Delhi feel that EC may not hold elections to Telangana along with Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Mizoram.
There are two options one to hold elections for these four states in December and go in for separate polls in Telangana in January. In case the Centre decides to go in for simulataneous polls of Lok Sabha and Assembly and if it gets the nod of Parliament, then all elections could be postponed. The situation right now, they say is little dicey.
KCR claiming so could be viewed as impropriety but then what ultimately matters is winning the war. Perhaps that could be the reason why KCR said so, a BJP source told The Hans India.
As far as the Central government is concerned, sources say, it has no objection for early elections in TS. They claim that they do not want to do anything that would harm the TRS. The pink party, the BJP leaders say, has always stood by the Centre on crucial issues and hence there is no reason why they should oppose any move by the state to go in for early elections.
However, as far as political atmosphere in Telangana is concerned, it is going to witness a lot of cacophony from Thursday with all political parties hitting the road and launching high-voltage political campaign.
