Khammam: The Bandh call given by the opposition parties against skyrocketing fuel prices received good response in the district as most of the institutions remained closed and traffic was thin on Monday.

Almost all schools and colleges, shopping malls, super markets and medical stores in the district remained closed since morning. The roads and Khammam Bus Stand gave a deserted look due to the bandh.

Staging dharna at Bus stand, TPCC working president Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka came down heavily against the Centre for failing to control the rising fuel prices.

“The poor are yet to get the benefits of several Central schemes, but the government claims the schemes are successful and is busy in taking credit through advertisements,” he said.

MLC Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy said, “the price of crude oil in the international market is not very high, even though the Central and State governments are increasing the prices of petrol, diesel and natural gas and are robbing the middle-class people.

The government must take immediate steps for bringing down the fuel prices otherwise the agitations will be intensified to teach the government a fitting lesson, he warned.

Former MP Renuka Chowdhary said, “after the fall in value of Indian rupee to its lowest against the US dollar and rise in crude oil prices, rates of petrol and diesel have witnessed multiple hikes.

The unabated rise in fuel prices has evoked reactions from the general public who are suffering due to the ongoing situation and they are extremely angry with the Narendra Modi government, she alleged.

The representatives of student organisations TNSF, AISF, SFI, PDSU alleged that the prices of daily commodities and vegetables are also increasing with the hike in petrol and diesel prices which is affecting the living conditions of many middle-class and poor people.
