Shahlibanda: With the GHMC demolishing most of the structures, the road-widening works from Himmatpura in Shalibanda to Fateh Darwaza and from Mir Wazeer Ali Masjid towards Hussaini Alam via Doodh Bowli has picked up pace. Following land acquisition, the authorities have already demolished the choking lane connecting Volga hotel junction to Fateh Darwaza and the process of demolition will be completed by the year end.

According to officials, with road-widening of about 2 km stretch being under taken by GHMC aimed to provide a better connectivity to the important localities of Shalibanda to Hussaini Alam and also Bahadurpura, bypassing the Charminar and even Chowmohallah palace and Murgi Chowk. Given the fact that this stretch has already been choked by vehicular movement has increased manifold in the recent years. The road-widening which will not only help commuters a smooth flow but also increase the options for those who wish to avoid traffic snarls, near heritage belt. This stretch has been favourite for those travelling towards Bahadurpura and Kishanbagh and if the width of this road is doubled from existing 40 ft to 80 ft, the travel time will decrease considerably.

GHMC Section Officer, Md Kabeerullah Khan said that the road- widening on this stretch would accommodate more vehicles and traffic flow. He said that as part of land acquisition process, a total of 165 properties were acquired and the demolitions which began a couple of months back are near completion. The remaining structures will be demolished in the coming days and the process will be completed by the year end.  “Most of the properties are demolished while some of them are getting delayed owing to delay of compensation through cheques. Once the property owner’s get compensation the work on the entire stretch will be cleared for road-widening and the entire process of pulling down these buildings will be completed by year end,” he explained.

The commuters taking the route of Shalibanda to Bahadurpura expressed contentment about the development being undertaken on the stretch, as this would decrease the travel time owing to traffic snarls. “I take this route regularly, but from Fateh Darwaza to Voulga hotel during peak hours I get struck in the traffic snarls. Road-widening will surely decrease the commuter woes on this stretch,” hoped Mohammed Abdul Jabbar, a Tolichowki resident.
