Mahbubnagar: Marking the World blood donation day on Monday, Lion’s Natarajan, president of Red Cross Society of Mahbubnagar unit, urged the youth to inculcate the novel habit of donating blood, as it can help rescue the lives of those who are in emergency and distress.

On the occasion, the Red Cross Society president flagged off an awareness rally with 1000 students at the NTR Government Degree and PG College in the district. While speaking on the occasion he said that a healthy individual between 18-60 years of age can donate blood once in every three months. “A healthy individual in the age group of 18-60 years can donate blood up to 168 times in his life span.

Donating blood is a novel habit and particularly the youth must inculcate and extend their helping hand to the society by way of donating blood, which can be used to safe lives of millions who are dying due to lack of blood,” said Lion’s Natarajan, while starting a blood donation camp at the College premises.

Recollecting the historical background as to how the Red Cross Society came into being, Dr. Natarajan said that it was in the year 1863 an Italian named Henry Duenant had established the Red cross society for the first time and organized blood donation camps to procure blood from the donors to save the lives of soldiers wounded in the war. “It was Henry Duenant; an Italian citizen had established the Red Cross society.

He was moved when he saw thousands of soldiers were dying due blood loss with bleeding wounds. It was then he decided to establish Red Cross Society and organized blood donation camps to secure blood from donors to save the lives of bleeding soldiers,” informed Dr. Natarajan.

While commemorating the World Blood Donation day, the authorities of Red Cross Society in the district also held an essay writing competition where about 500 students took part in the competition. Among them 20 students were selected for their best essay and were given prizes.

On the occasion, to become part of the Red Cross Societies novel programme, about 1000 students of the NTR Degree and PG College vowed to get registered with the society and become members of the society. Later they all took part in an awareness rally.
