White Cane Day to be celebrated grandly

Somajiguda: Friendly Environment for Disabled (FED), an NGO, in association with National Academy of Construction (NAC), BLN Charitable Trust and Planetary Society of India, will be celebrating International White Cane Safety Day in a grand way on October 15. A poster on the event was inaugurated by its Chairman G Gangaram and Dr. Vijay Bhaskar on Friday.

On the occasion, Gangaram, who is a differently-abled person, said, “You can do things that I cannot do, but together we can do many things. White Cane Day started in 1964, and the world countries have recognized October 15 as the white cane day to help bring awareness on white cane, which is used by visually challenged people to navigate their way. On the day, we celebrate the importance of white cane and promote a safe environment for white cane users.”

With the support of Telangana Tourism Department, a variety of social and cultural activities will be held on 15th October from morning to evening, as part of International White Cane Safety Day.   Ragunandan Kumar, director at Planetary Society India, said, “As part of the day FED is organizing blindfolded walk from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm wherein participants tie a black cloth on their eyes and walk along with visually-disabled people.”
