Hyderabad: The Social Service Club of the 93rd Foundation Course, being attended by trainee civil servants, at Dr MCR HRD Institute, organised a Blood Donation Camp. The idea behind the initiative was to give something back to the society and to spread awareness on the importance of donating blood. Over 70 trainee civil servants donated blood on this occasion. The Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad, which represented at the camp by its medical and paramedical staff, was the recipient Institution.

Divya Parmar, IES, Director, Administration and Course Coordinator, inaugurated the camp. She said that a large number of patients in India, who need blood transfusion, suffer on account of severe non-availability of blood donors. “India fell short of 1.9 million units of blood in 2016-17, which could have been of help in 3,20,000 heart surgeries or 49,000 organ transplants”, she added. Aakanksha Kulshrestha, IRS (IT), Secretary of the Social Service Club, said the hallmark of civil services is service to the citizens. “Blood donation is one of the ways in which the officers can be of help to the society”, she said. Dr Mahesh Kumar, Assistant Professor, NIMS, said there are a lot of misconceptions related to blood donation, which are not true. “All healthy people over 18 should make it a habit to donate blood, once in three months. “The blood donation does not make a person weak as the human body produces new blood continuously”, he said.

Vinod Ekbote, Director General’s Nominee for the Social Service Club, said that blood donation, even in small quantities, is the most precious donation considering the fact that blood cannot be manufactured and it has to come from the donors alone. “The Blood Donation Camp was an occasion for us to realise the importance of community service”, opined the trainee civil servants unanimously. Mamta Jain, ISS, Supriya Ghaytadak, IIS, Astha Jain, IPoS, and Hrudaya Das, IRS (IT), who are the members of the Social Service Club, put their best foot forward to make the event a great success.
