Charminar:  With the objective of sensitising school children about child sex abuse and sexual harassment, an ‘educational fair’ was organised by Shaheen, a women resource and welfare association, at its office in Mughalpura on Thursday.

Highlights:

•    Several students, teachers attend a programme organised by Shaheen
•    Six stalls with different concepts drew the attention of youngsters

The children were not only enlightened about the important issues relevant to the societies, but also feedback was taken from them to know if they understood the topic. A total of 429 students and their teachers attended the programme, which was designed with illustrative models to provide vivid accounts of what children and women go through in the society.

The six different stalls at the programme grabbed the interest of the youngsters who interacted with the organisers. Each stall took a different concept – Sexual and Reproductive Rights (Tan se Mann Tak), Importance of Education (Snakes and Ladders), Myths about Gender (9 Pins), Sexual Harassment (Roadside Romeo), Secret behind Beauty (Sundarta ka Raaz) and Laws and Legal Benefits for Women (Qanooni Jankaari).

“As part of generating awareness over the sensitive issue, we were able to explain the students about important issues. Almost all the feedbacks given by the students indicate that they understood the concepts well.  We shall be continuing similar programmes in the future,” said Jameela Nishath, chief functionary and founding member of the NGO.

Earlier in October, parents of girl child were given counselling on the occasion of International Girl Child Day. The parents were advised to understand the minds of young girls who are exposed to technological advancements and engaged in increased use of smart phones and social media.
