Khammam: The distribution of Bathukamma sarees and new clothes to poor Christians in view of Christmas festival began in the district on Wednesday.

At a programme in Khammam Municipal Corporation’s (KMC) 20th division, MLA P Ajay Kumar, Mayor B Papalal along with District Collector RV Karnan distributed Bathukamma sarees to beneficiaries.

District Library Chairman MA Qamar, KMC Commissioner J Srinivas Rao, corporator D Lakshmi and others attended the programme. Speaking on the occasion the MLA said since the TRS came to power for the first time all religions were offered equal respect and honour. It was really laudable that the government celebrates festivals of all religions in the State and offers free clothes, Ajay Kumar noted.

The CM wanted to offer sarees to women as an elder of a family. All TRS workers must ensure that all eligible women could get the sarees. Over 70, 000 sarees would be distributed in Khammam, he informed.

The TRS came to power government for the second time just because of the welfare programmes like Asara pension, Kalyana Lakshmi and other schemes introduced by the government. Women played a crucial role in the TRS victory, he said.

Similarly, Wyra MLA elect L Ramulu Naik distributed sarees to women at Garlaoddu and Julurpad in the district. Bathukamma sarees were supposed to be distributed at the time of that festival, but due to some technical issues they were given now, he said.

He also distributed clothes to poor Christians at Wyra. He said TRS government is most secular government in whole India and it supports all religious beliefs and people of different religions. The people must live in harmony, he advised.

Wyra tahsildar Uma Devi and others were present at the programme. Likewise, the distribution of Batukamma sarees took place at Kallur, Karepally, Dammapet and other places. At Sathupalli, the sarees would be distributed to women on Thursday.
