Fund crunch hits Palamuru varsity

Update: 2019-01-23 08:06 IST

Mahbubnagar: Severe fund crunch has hit the development works in Palamuru University for the last one year. Though the varsity authorities had drafted a development plan with a total outlay of Rs 110 crore for the year 2018-19, the State government confined the allocation to just Rs 20 crore and till date, even that amount has not been released. As a result, the the authorities are facing tough time in carrying forward the development works.

Though the university authorities have somehow started the construction of examination building and other facilities for students like hostels and others, they are also moving at a snail’s pace due to non-availability of funds.

“We had proposed Rs 110 crore for the overall development of PG centres, hostels, examination branches, VC building and other facilities in the university, however, to our disappointment, the government had allocated only Rs 20 crore which is much less compared to the previous year’s allocation of Rs 45.16 crore. Except for the salaries, the government has not released any funds for the development works till date.

As already the financial year is coming to an end, we fear that these funds may be lapsed and the development works may get stalled completely,” said Vice-Chancellor Raja Ratnam.

Even in the previous year, though the government had allocated Rs 45.16 crores, it released only Rs 12 crore affecting the development in the mid way. The university authorities are urging the higher-ups in the government to release the funds liberally and help enable the developments in the higher education sector of the district.

“Though the government is talking tall with regard to supporting education, but when it comes to release of funds, it is backtracking causing delay in providing adequate facilities for students. If quality of education is to be maintained, adequate fund allocation and at the same time release of funds in time will help improve quality,” observed the student leaders of various associations in the University.
