Ten more free food fridges to be set up
Hi-Tec City: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is planning to set up 10 more free food refrigerators in the city. Speaking to The Hans India, Harichandana, Additional Commissioner, said, “In the coming days, more free food refrigerators would be set up at places where maximum poor people visit such as Niloufer Hospital, ESIC Hospital, Chanda Nagar and other places.”
On Tuesday, Balamma a daily wage labourer, was seen taking a food packet that was handed to her by one of the staff manning the fridge. Presently, there are three free food refrigerators at Madhapur, Shilparamam and near Chiranjeevi Blood Bank.The GHMC has tied up with Apple Homes, an NGO, and the plan is to set up 100 more refrigerators in the city. Each refrigerator is set up at a cost of Rs 1.5 lakh. A senior official of GHMC said, “The Rs 5 meal scheme too is a huge hit and the free food refrigerator too is getting good response.”
Raghav M K, a software professional who was passing by, stopped to enquire about the concept. He said, “This is so heartening to hear about such a novel initiative. It is also so cool; the needy can just pick up food.”Dr Neeelima Arya, founder of Apple Homes, said that, "The initiative is not solely meant for the poor. It is for everyone who wants to have a free meal at any time of a day, one can pick up food.”
