Sakhi centre launched for women in distress
Mahbubnagar: With an aim to build confidence among women, the Mahbubnagar district administration has launched Sakhi, a woman care centre on the premises of Government General Hospital in Mahbubnagar on Friday.
The main objective of this Sakhi centre is to provide full security and legal support to woman who have been subjected to harassment, like neglect, domestic violence, social intimidation or any kind of suppression.
In fact, this centre was launched last year in a private building. However, as the government had allocated funds for the new building, it had been built in a record time and now the Sakhi team has got its own building, which was inaugurated by Srinvias Goud, Excise, Tourism and Youth Welfare Minister on Friday.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said, “Even though we are having lot of laws to protect the women from harassment and the acts of violence and neglect, women are still being treated as second class citizens in our society and put to so much suffering.
To give a confidence and provide legal and institutional protection to women, the Sakhi centre has been launched in the district. Using this, women can file cases without fear and bring the perpetrators of crime towards woman to book.”
The Sakhi centre had registered 450 cases last year and this has gone down to 344 this year in the district. At present, the centre is manned by an Assistant Sub-Inspector, a head constable and other police staff.
Any woman who is being harassed can dial 181 number and soon the Sakhi team will reach the area and take into custody the culprits and bring them to book and protect the woman. This is the only second such Sakhi centre established in the entire State of Telangana.
