Several areas lack bus shelters in city
Hyderabad: With most of the bus shelters being under construction in the city, RTC commuters are forced to stand in the open facing summer heat. Major bus stops like Nalgonda Cross Roads and don’t even have shelters.
Bus stops in places like Kothapet are taking forever to complete the construction. Some bus stops were demolished to construct footpaths, but they have not been built again. This is resulting in bad state of affairs with bus commuters finding their own means of shelters, like standing under the shop establishments and running when the bus arrives.
“It is getting difficult with the onset of summer and the bus travellers are forced to stand in the open or without proper seating. In some stops, even if there is a proper shelter, the bus will stop way ahead of it. And in some places the area around the stop is filled with garbage dumps, it would be nice if the stops have basic amenities as we depend on this transport every day,” says Sreevani, an employee at Deloitte who commutes by bus on a regular basis.
In January 2018, GHMC proposed 826 bus shelters across the city in which 430 would be newly-constructed and 396 existing shelters would be renovated.
Ramesh, Advertisements Officer, GHMC says, “out of the planned 826 bus shelters, almost 500 are constructed and are in use but for the rest, we have been facing problems. Some roads like Amberpet and Uppal are in the process of road widening and we can only construct the shelters once the roads are done.”
When asked about the other bus stops at Metro routes, the official said, “Even though there has been sanction for new and existing bus stops along the Metro route, HMR officials are demolishing the old stops and constructing their own shelters and footpaths. So, when these issues are resolved, we will immediately get into action and complete the planned number.”
