Prominent lyricists of Light music were felicitated at a grand function at NTR auditorium, Telugu University here on Tuesday. The musical evening, organised by the Delhi Telugu Academy and TANA of US jointly, saw mellifluous songs, penned by the lyricists of yester-year and the present, rendered by young cuckoos of Little Musicians Academy.

Those who were felicitated include Acharya Tirumala, Vaddepalli Krishna, Dr D Kameswara Rao, Varanasi Naga Lakshmi and Dwibhashyam Srilakshmi Vandana and others. Speaking on the occasion, S Venugopala Chary, special representative of government of Telangana at New Delhi, said the initiative to protect our culture should come from the people themselves.

Eminent singer and music director, K Ramachary, who was the brain behind the event, exhorted that the age-old Guru-shishya parampara should continue like a live stream and the lyricists play a key role in keeping the flame of light music aloft. Vandana, a singer-composer, who penned and brought out several CDs and other albums, called for greater societal role in preserving the rich tradition.

“Lyricists and writers are those whose works stand the test of the time. Even today, great works of lyricists like Krishna Sastry and Balatrapu Rajanikantha Rao are fondly remembered. So, the works shall not hover round the beauty of the nature or spring, but should reflect the issues concerning people of various walks of like,” Vandana felt.
