Warangal: Wardhannapet MLA Aroori Ramesh called upon the societal members to ensure equal rights to girl children and abstain from the evil practice of gender bias.

He said the practice of gender bias was not just inhuman, but also poses a threat to human resource development in the country as majority of the girls and women were deprived of their right to progress.

The MLA addressed a gathering of women at a programme organised under the aegis of Sarvodaya Youth Organisation commemorating the ensuing International Women’s Day at Nagaram in Hasanparthy mandal in Warangal Urban district on Friday.

Ramesh appealed the parents to provide equal and quality educational opportunities to girl children in their families. Girls who were given chance to prove themselves have excelled in many fields and parents must understand that. Women have to play a greater role in the development of the society, he said.

The local tahsildar Uma Rani stated that everyone should make collective efforts to eliminate gender-based violence targeting the women and girls. Statistics reveal that out of five women three were subjected to domestic violence and such trend should be stopped, she said.

The organisation secretary P Damodar informed that marking the Women’s Day they have organised kabaddi and kho-kho competitions in 10 villages in Hasanparthy mandal. Efforts were being made to ensure a violence free society for women with the help of educational programmes and awareness camps.

DRDA programme manager N Sathish asked the women affected by domestic violence seek assistance from governmental and non-governmental organisations. They should make use of several welfare programmes being implemented by state and central governments, he added.

MPP K Sukanya, Gudeppad market committee chairman B Rajani Kumar, sarpanches Ch Panduranga Rao and G Eashwara, Farmers Coordination Committee coordinator Jayaraj and others were present.
