Student injured in rival clash in NITW campus
Warangal: In an incident that was unheard of in the recent past at National Institute of Technology, Warangal (NITW), a B Tech (Civil) final year student was attacked with sharp weapons and iron rods, inflicting bleeding injuries on him.
Six of the seven students, involved in the attack were arrested by Kazipet police and remanded to judicial custody, while the other one was absconding. The student, identified as Jaipreeth Singh of Uttar Pradesh, suffered stabbings on his head and leg in the attack that took place during the late evening hours of Sunday on the campus.
According to the victim, he was attending a music show by Indian idol winner LV Revanth organised on the concluding day of cultural festival ‘Springspree’-18, when a group of students assaulted him with knives and iron rods.
The sources in the institute informed that after the NITW Students Council elections in last year were over, differences cropped up between friends of Jaipreeth Sigh and the students of M Sc (Tech) and M Sc (Physics), who hailed from Haryana and other north Indian states.
Jaipreeth Singh and his friends have beaten the M Sc students in a clash that took place outside the campus five days ago. In retaliation to that, the M Sc students have attacked him on Sunday. The entire issue was under the notice of the institute authorities, but they failed to act properly to sort it out, sources added.
Kazipet CI Ch Ajay said during preliminary enquiry it was learnt that the rivalry related to Students Council elections held in last August was the reason behind the trouble. The main accused Amit Yadav, Pankaj Yadav, Dheeraj, Ravikanth Yadav and Nitish Kumar were remanded while Rohith Kumar was absconding.
Responding to the incident, the Dean (Student Welfare) Prof L Ramgopal Reddy said that the institute authorities summoned both the groups soon after learning about the clash between them and warned them not to create trouble on the campus. Both Amith Yadav and Jaipreeth Singh were told to be quiet.
“But Jaipreet Singh was attacked in pre-planned manner as we were busy in monitoring the cultural fest Springspree on Sunday. The incident was recorded on CCTV cameras on the campus and accused cannot escape,” he told The Hans India.
Ramgopal Reddy further informed the institute’s Disciplinary Committee would meet soon to initiate action against the students involved in the clash. The victim of the attack was recuperating at a private hospital in Warangal.
