Karimnagar: The patriotic fervour ignited by Jammikunta town with its residents coming to a standstill every morning to respect the national anthem has caught many a town and village across the country. Karimnagar city, which also took a leaf out of Jammikunta’s book early this year, now wants to raise the bar of patriotism by setting up a 150 feet national flag, second largest in the Telangana.

Karimnagar, a Smart City in the making, will soon feel proud of being home to one of the largest national flag in the country and second in the State. The Karimnagar Municipal Corporation (KMC) has its plan well visualised to unfurl a largest tricolour in the city, it seems as the authorities made all the groundwork before making its proposal public.

After scouting for a suitable location, the authorities zeroed in on Nizam-era Government High School, popularly known as Multi-Purpose School, where a recreational park on the lines of Hyderabad’s Lumbini Park is coming up. Mayor Sardar Ravinder Singh and Municipal Commissioner K Shashanka have already inspected the site a couple of days ago.

It’s learnt that government had already given a go-ahead for the project, estimated to cost Rs 29.93 lakh. The proposed height of the flagpole is 150 feet — 141 feet less than that one in Hyderabad.

It may be mentioned here that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao unfurled the country’s second largest national flag measuring 108 X 72 feet on a 291-foot tall flag post at Sanjeevaiah Park in Hyderabad on June 2, 2016, which also happened to be the second Telangana Formation Day.

Currently, the National Flag mounted atop the 360 feet pole at the Indo Pak Attari Border in Amritsar is country’s tallest flag. It’s followed by Kolhapur (303 ft), Ranchi (293 ft) and Hyderabad (291 ft).

Speaking to The Hans India, Municipal Commissioner K Shashanka said: “The prestigious project is taken up as part of recreational park development on the premises of Multi-Purpose School. MP B Vinod Kumar is instrumental behind taking up the initiative.”

According to Mayor Ravinder Singh, the R&B which is entrusted with responsibility of carrying the project has called for tenders. In addition to the upcoming Manair Riverfront tourism project alongside other developmental activity in the city, the 150-foot national flag will add more colour to the city fame. The project is likely to be completed in two to three months, according to officials.
