Amid water woes, GWMC sitting pretty

Warangal: With the giant-sized engines running full throttle pumping Godavari waters from Devadula to Dharmasagar summer storage tank currently, the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) is unperturbed and sitting pretty. While Greater Warangal rely on Devadula waters to quench its thirst during this summer, the hopes of people living in other parts of the erstwhile district by and large hinge on Mission Bhagiratha to happen.

For the first time in recent past perhaps, the nearly 10 lakh denizens living in Greater Warangal will be having no water worries this summer with both of its summer storage tanks, Dharmasagar and Waddepally, together holding 730 million cubic feet (MCFT).

GWMC Executive Engineer A Linga Murthy told The Hans India: “Even the irrigation department stops drawing waters from Devadula as on today, we have sufficient waters up and till June 10.” The GWMC has a plan to press 91 tankers into service to quench the thirst of denizens living in areas where pipeline supplies are hard to reach, he added.

The situation in Janagaon, which can easily be called a dry district, could have been dicey even more if not for the bulk supply of waters currently is on to almost all the villages spread across 11 mandals under Janagaon Segment, sourcing around 60 million liters a day from Yellampally Project.

“But for the slow progress of pipeline network and intra-village works in around 70 habitations due to various reasons, 90 per cent of the Mission Bhagiratha works were completed,” Y Krishnaiah, Executive Engineer, Janagaon Segment, said, adding that water in Yellampally reservoir is sufficient to supply till August. Efforts are on to wrap up the works by April 15, he said.

In Mahabubabad, the situation is precarious. With Munneru stream from which the district headquarters sources drinking water has already gone dry, the authorities now depended on nearby Eedulapusapally tank. It’s unlikely that several mandals in Mahabubabad constituency getting water through Mission Bhagiratha in the near future considering the progress of works. The slow progress of works even came for a debate in the recent held review meeting conducted by Deputy Chief Minister K Srihari.

“About 80 per cent of works in Bhupalaplly-Manthani Segment are completed. Presently, water is being supplied to Bhupalpally town,” the Mission Bhagiratha DE Parameshwari said.

However, Rural District Collector M Haritha recently said that all households will get drinking water supply by March 31, in Parkal constituency, people likely to face water problem as the intra-village works of Bhagiratha are still in progress. The Urban District administration says that all villages will get bulk water by April 15. It’s learnt that works of LMD Segment that takes care of the Urban District are still in progress.
