Karimnagar: Cops are not just keepers of law, they are public-spirited too, or at least that is what one gets to understand, going by the altruistic trait shown by them in a faraway Telangana village.

In an exemplary move, the Gangadhar police officials conducted the marriage of a poor girl whose father has been hospitalised due to ill-health here at Mallapur village of Gangadhar mandal in Karimnagar on Wednesday.

Karimnagar Commissioner of Police V B Kamalasan Reddy, along with officials of Choppadandi police limits, donned the role of an elderly family member of the poor Dalit girl and conducted her long-pending wedding with all traditional elegance.

It may be mentioned here that three years ago Kolipaka Latha (23), daughter of Anjaiah and Bujjamma, resident of Mallapur village of Gangadhar mandal got engaged to Kottepalli Lakshman Kumar (27), resident of Baopeta village of Kottapalli mandal.

Due to bad health condition of Latha’s father, the wedding was postponed several times and the money that was saved for the marriage was spent for giving treatment to her father.

However, after coming to know about the pathetic condition of Latha and her family, Gangadhar Sub Inspector Pullaiah conveyed the information to Choppadandi Circle Inspector Ramesh and Karimnagar Rural Assistant Commissioner of Police T Usha Rani, who later decided to conduct the marriage of Latha.

Collecting donations from police officials, they made all arrangements for her wedding as per the tradition and conducted her marriage with Lakshman Kumar on a grand note.

Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner of Police V B Kamalasan Reddy said it was the prime responsibility of every citizen to extend a helping hand to those who were in need.

Locals say that it is a good sign to see that police officials are coming forward and involving in such activities, showing their humane side and setting an example for others.

Additional DCP S Srinivas Rao, Circle Inspectors Ch Ramesh, Karunakar Rao, Shashidar Reddy, RI Mallesham, Sub Inspectors Nageshwar Rao, V Ravi, Swaroopa Raj, Vamshi Krishna and Naresh Reddy were present.
