Be it in during the time of the Kings or be in the 21st century, safety of women has always been a question. To portray the problems faced by every woman, a 20th century-based theatre company ‘Gubbi’ staged a wonderful story of a queen that used humour to entertain and give message to awaken the minds of the people. The legendary play ‘Kanthimathi’ that is also known for its all-woman cast was staged by ‘Surabhi’ from Nalgonda during the ongoing Telangana Yuva Natakotasam in Hyderabad.

The play is the story of a queen, who is betrayed by her king and left in a forest. She faces troubles as men, seeing her alone, try to own and kidnap her. And, she cleverly tries to escape from them. Hema Manasa Surabhi, who played the lead role of Kanthamani says, “My character in this play has shown how a woman tries to tackle problems on her own when she is betrayed and left alone by her husband, despite battling with the trauma.

I can say that this is happening even today, and it is only with bravery that women tackle such things in life and move forward. That is the message we would want to give through this play.”On stressing about the all women crew in the play, she shares, “We are a 50-member women crew. We are happy that this is our first play in the Telangana Yuva Natakotsavam, and we are participating as an all women crew.”

Talking about her passion towards acting she says, “I was born to act, it is always been with me since I was a child. It makes me happy when I play the role of strong and brave women.” Dispelling the notion that women cannot achieve anything and are weak in what they do, the play ‘Kanthimathi’ makes an attempt to change in the mindset of people, with a humorous touch that made the audience laugh their way out.
