Martyrs ignored in history books, says Minister
New Delhi: The freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the country have not got their due respect and honour in history books taught in schools and colleges, feels Minister of State for HRD Satya Pal Singh.
"After the country's independence, martyrs have not got appropriate honour and respect in history books taught in schools and colleges," Singh tweeted in Hindi.
He further tweeted, " Veeran hain kabren unkin jinke lahu se jalte the chirage vatan, jagmagate hain makbare unke jo bechte the shahidon ke kafan (Lonely are graves of those whose blood used to light lamps in the country, while mausoleum of those are lightened up who use to sell shrouds of martyrs."
Singh made the comments on the martyrdom day of the great freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. "My heartfelt tributes to Shaheed S Bhagat Singh, Rajguru n Sukhdev who sacrificed their lives for Bharat Mata. Today is their martyrday (23 March, 1931.)," he tweeted.
However, this is not the first time that the minister has questioned contents of the present curriculum in the country.
The IPS-turned-politician had recently recommended to Central Advisory Body of Education (CABE) that there are certain mantras which codified 'laws of motion' much before it was discovered by Newton.
"Hence it is essential that traditional knowledge must be incorporated in our curriculum and Vaastu compliance of educational buildings is important for learning," he had said. He had also stoked a controversy when he had claimed that Darwin's theory of evolution was incorrect and should not be taught in schools and colleges.
“Nobody, including our ancestors, in written or oral, have said they saw an ape turning into a man.... Humans appeared on Earth as humans from the very beginning,” he had said at an event in Aurangabad in January. Union HRD minister Prakash Javadekar had asked Singh to refrain from making such comments and leave the science to scientists as it is their domain.
