Day-Night Test: Virat Kohli claims unwanted record as Australia thrash India by 8 wickets

Indian skipper Virat Kohli claimed an unwanted record at the end of the first Test against Australia in Adelaide on Saturday.

For the first time since 2008, Kohli has ended a calendar year without scoring a single century. With one more Test left in 2020 in Team India's schedule, Kohli has

made himself unavailable for the same, bringing 2020 to an end for himself.

The reason behind Kohli's century drought can largely be because of less cricket being played during the year owning to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Including the Adelaide Test, where India were thrashed by eight wickets inside three days by Australia, Kohli has played 22 matches in 2020, across formats. The

32-year-old has batted in an aggregate of 24 innings, including six in Tests, nine in One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and nine in Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is),

scoring 842 runs at an average of 36.60, including seven half-centuries.

Before the ongoing Border Gavaskar series, India played Tests in New Zealand at the beginning of the year. In the two Tests Kohli played in New Zealand, the

skipper scored a mere total of 38 runs.

On Saturday, Australia hammered India by eight wickets at the Adelaide Oval to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match Border Gavaskar series.

Reacting to India's loss in Adelaide, Kohli said that it was hard to put the feelings into words.

"We had a lead of 60-odd when we arrived. And then just collapsed. Played two days of good cricket to get in a position and then just lose it in an hour. Really hurts.

Probably didn't have enough intent in the batting today. It's something that needs to be reflected and learnt from. Bowlers bowled similar kinds of areas in the first

innings as well, but then our mindset was to get runs.

There were some good balls. But I don't think it did anything drastic. Just the atmosphere was created where runs were difficult to come by. I think it was a

combination of both - lack of intent, and bowlers bowling in good areas. Obviously, you want to be committed to the team's cause. Confident the boys going forward

will reflect on this and come up with a better result on Boxing Day. No news on Shami, he's going for a scan now. Was in a lot of pain, couldn't even lift his arm. We'll

probably know in the evening what happens," added Kohli in the post-match interview.
