IND v AUS: Warner, Finch's record-breaking stand helps Australia thrash India by 10 wickets in 1st ODI

Update: 2020-01-14 21:08 IST

Opening batsmen David Warner and Aaron Finch broke and made several records as Australia thrashed India by 10 wickets in the first One-Day International (ODI) on Tuesday.

Chasing India's target of 256, Australia sealed the match inside 38 overs and went 1-0 up in the three-match ODI series in front of a charged up Wankhade Stadium in Mumbai.

Warner and Finch scored as many as 258 runs in 37.4 overs and that meant, they now have the highest stand for any wicket against India in the 50-over format. Their unbeaten partnership is also Australia's third-highest stand for any wicket in the ODIs.

As far as Warner is concerned, he now is involved in Australia's top two opening stands in ODIs. His 284-run partnership with Travis Head, which they had scored at home against Pakistan in 2017, continues to remain their highest partnership for the first wicket.

Player of the Match Warner also became the fastest Australian to 5,000-run mark in the ODIs. The explosive batsman, who scored an unbeaten 112-ball 128, surpassed Dean Jones, who had reached the feat in his 128th innings, while Warner has clinched the milestone in his 115th innings. Overall, he became the fourth-fastest to the mark after South Africa's Hashim Amla (101 innings), and joint-second Viv Richards and Virat Kohli (114 innings).

While it was Warner's 18th century in the ODIs, Australian skipper recorded his 16th one-day ton in a knock which included 13 boundaries and two sixes.

Team India, who have been heavily dominant at home especially in the limited-overs format, suffered their fourth consecutive loss to Australia at home in the white-ball game. Virat Kohli and Co were outplayed in all the departments. After being put to bat first, the Indians had a poor start to their innings as they lost Rohit Sharma at 13 for 1. India were 134 for 1 at one point before they ended up losing four wickets for just 30 runs. Eventually, they managed to post only 255 runs on the board before being bowled out in 49.1 overs.

The second ODI will be played in Rajkot on Jan. 17 and India need to win the match in order to keep the series alive.
