IND vs NZ, 1st ODI: Virat Kohli picks the moment that took away match from India

Virat Kohli praised the duo of and Ross Taylor and Tom Latham as he said New Zealand's stand-in skipper's innings took away the match from India on Wednesday.

New Zealand chased down India's target of 348 with 11 balls and four wickets to spare and went 1-0 up in the ongoing three-match One-Day International (ODI) series. It was a great and confidence-boosting start by the hosts, who are coming off a 5-0 loss in the Twenty20 International (ODI) series against Kohli's side.

Taylor recorded his 21st ODI century as he remained unbeaten on 109 from 84 balls. His knock was inclusive of 10 boundaries and four sixes. He shared a match-changing partnership of 138 runs with Latham for the fourth wicket. When Latham came out to join Taylor in the middle, the BlackCaps were 171 for 3 and needed a strong stand to bring them back in the chase. Luckily on Wednesday, they got that from Latham and Taylor.

Speaking about New Zealand's performance in the 1st ODI and what changed the momentum, Indian captain Kohli said,"An outstanding performance by New Zealand. We thought 348 was good enough, especially after the start we got with the ball. I think Tom's innings took the game away from us. Ross and Tom were unstoppable in the middle overs."

He also acknowledged the efforts from KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, who registered his maiden ODI ton in Hamilton. Unfortunately, the 25-year-old will always remember his first-ever hundred for India in a losing cause.

"To bat with a positive frame of mind for about 25 overs after that chance is not a small thing at all. I got to say that the opposition played better than us and deserved to win today. Both new openers gave us a good start, hope they continue to do the same. Shreyas's hundred was outstanding and KL was brilliant with the bat too," Kohli added in his interview at the post-match press conference in Hamilton's Seddon Park.

For India to stay alive in the three-match series, they will have to win the second ODI, which will be played on Saturday in Auckland's Eden Park.
