India to play their first day-night Test against Bangladesh in Kolkata

On what will be a momentous occasion in Indian cricket, Team India will play its first-ever day-night Test in November. With the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) giving its nod to the BCCI's proposal of playing a day-night game in the upcoming two-match Test series between the two teams, India is set to become the latest entrant onto the list of countries to have tried the recent experiment in Test cricket.

The day-night Test, in the upcoming series, is slated to be played from 22-26 November at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

The move comes days after the newly elected BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and Indian skipper Virat Kohli expressed willingness to play day-night Test cricket.

With the ICC playing conditions mentioning that the consent of the visiting board must be taken before organising a day-night Test, the BCCI sought the BCB's approval in this regard. "It's a good development. Test cricket needs this push. I and my team were bent on it and thanks to Virat (Kohli) also, he agreed," Ganguly told PTI on Tuesday.

On Monday, Ganguly had stated that the BCCI was looking to mark the occasion by felicitating Mary Kom, PV Sindu and other Indian Olympians. The former Indian skipper also shared his plans of making the day-night Test an annual affair at Eden Gardens, similar to Cricket Australia's annual 'Pink Test'.

While the experiment was introduced in a bid to gain viewership for Test cricket, the BCCI had earlier refrained from giving it a try citing that India did not have sufficient experience of playing first-class cricket under lights. A few objections also pointed out that handling the pink ball, under the lights, was a problem in the sub-continent.
