India vs Australia: Big blow to hosts as David Warner ruled out of 3rd ODI, T20I series; doubtful for Tests

David Warner, who suffered an injury during the second One-Day International (ODI) between India and Australia on Sunday has been ruled out of the final ODI and the upcoming Twenty20 International (T20I) series and will race against time to regain fitness for the Border-Gavaskar Test series.

Warner suffered a groin strain in Australia's 51-run win in the second ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) and has returned home to begin his rehab in the hope to be fit for the first Test, starting from Dec. 17 at the Adelaide Oval.

In an official statement, Cricket Australia has confirmed that D'Arcy Short has officially joined the T20I squad ahead of Wednesday's third ODI in Canberra. He has been training with the Australian squad since flying over from Perth to avoid any possible border closures ahead of his Big Bash League (BBL) commitments with the Hobart Hurricanes.

Meanwhile, Australia will also be without fast bowler Pat Cummins in their remaining limited-overs game this year. There are no injury concerns in Cummins' case, but coach Justin Langer has decided to rest him ahead of the day-night Test, having played non-stop through Australia's UK tour in August-September, the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the UAE, and the first two ODIs back home. The hosts have decided against adding a replacement for Cummins in the squad.

"Pat and Davie are critical to our plans for the Test series. Davie will work through his injury rehab and in Pat's case it is important all of our players are managed well to keep them mentally and physically fit throughout what is a challenging summer. The priority for both is being fully prepared for one of the biggest and most important home Test series we have played in recent years, especially with World Test Championship points up for grabs," Australia head coach Justin Langer was quoted by cricket.com.au, as saying.

Marcus Stoinis, who suffered a side strain in the opening ODI at the SCG last week, will remain with the squad. While he may not bowl, it is understood that he could potentially play as a specialist batsman. Meanwhile, his Western Australian teammate Mitch Marsh will not play the upcoming Australia A tour matches as the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) all-rounder is still recovering from an ankle injury he had sustained in the IPL. The cricket.com.au report has also revealed that Marsh is expected to make a comeback for Perth Scorchers in the BBL, which is set to begin on Dec. 10.
