IPL 2021: Sunrisers Hyderabad drop David Warner for Jason Roy

Update: 2021-09-27 19:49 IST

Jason Roy made his IPL debut in 2017 with Gujarat Lions

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have dropped struggling David Warner and have instead picked England opener Jason Roy for their Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Monday.

SRH have lost two consecutive matches in the second half of the IPL 2021, where Warner registered scores of 0 and 2. From nine matches, SRH have clinched just one win so far this season.

Roy started his IPL career with Gujarat Lions (GL) in 2017 before switching to Delhi Capitals (DC) in 2018. From nine matches, Roy has 179 runs to his name in the IPL at an average of less than 30. SRH signed the English explosive batsman as a replacement for Australia's Mitchell Marsh, who pulled out of IPL 2021 citing personal reasons.

The underway match between SRH and RR is Roy's first appearance for the Orange Army in the competition.

"We would have had a hit as well. But we will look to adapt early with the ball and limit their total. Few young players are getting opportunities. Jason Roy is at the top for David Warner. Pandey, Kedar miss out. Priyam Garg, Abhishek Sharma are playing. Sid Kaul replaces injured Khaleel.

Today there is something fresh. There are a lot of changes. So it is important that the youngsters come in and stick to their strengths. As a unit we do want to be putting performances together. That is the focus for us even though we are sort of no longer in the comp. We want to play the kind of cricket we are proud of," SRH captain Kane Williamson said at the toss on Monday.

RR captain Sanju Samson won the toss at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium and opted to bat.

While SRH are at the bottom of the table, with two points, RR are placed sixth, having bagged eight points.
