Just 1 hundred in 13 innings: Virat Kohli's struggles overseas continue post successful England 2018 tour

Virat Kohli was bounced out by New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult for just 19 runs during the ongoing first Test between the sides in Wellington on Sunday.

Boult, who had expressed a desire to get Kohli's wicket before the start of the Test, dismissed the Indian skipper for 43-ball 19. Kohli, who came walked in right after play resumed post the team break, batted briefly with Mayank Agarwal and then Ajinkya Rahane before getting out in the 46th over.

Kohli's previous successful overseas was India's tour of England in 2018. The Indian captain smashed 593 runs in India's 4-1 defeat. Following that, he has managed to register just one hundred in the next 13 innings. In the six Tests since the England tour, Kohli has scored 418 runs at an average of 38. These numbers would have been good enough for any other player but here, you are talking about Kohli, who has set the bar high for himself. The 123 that came against Australia in Perth remains Kohli's best Test innings in almost two years.

Not just in Tests, Kohli has suffered a dip in form across formats. In the ongoing New Zealand, Kohli has registered just one fifty in a total of nine innings in all three international formats. In the three-match ODI series, he averaged just 25 having scored 75 runs in three innings. In India's 5-0 win over the BlackCaps in the T20I series, the Indian captain averaged 26.25 as he scored 105 runs in four innings.

Since scoring 136 against Bangladesh at home in 2016, Kohli has now gone 20 innings straight without entering triple digits. This is his worst run since the forgettable tour of England in 2014.

The likes of Pujara, Agarwal and Rahane tried to gain some form in the warm-up game that was played before the 1st Test, Kohli – whose tour already was not going well – chose to skip it.

India have not won a Test series in New Zealand since MS Dhoni-led Team India to a 1-0 series win in 2009.
