'More To Come': Rohit hungry for more runs as India celebrates 3rd anniversary of his 3rd ODI double hundred
Rohit Sharma promises more double hundreds in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) as he celebrated the third anniversary of his historic third double ODI century on Sunday.
In December, 2017, Rohit scripted history as he became the first ever cricketer to score a third ODI 200. He achieved the feat at Mohali's PCA-IS Bindra Stadium with his unbeaten knock of 208 against Sri Lanka.
On Sunday, as Star Sports tweeted about the achievement, the explosive opener Rohit replied with a simple message," More to Come".
A total of eight double centuries have been scored to date in the 50-over format, and out of which, three belong to Rohit. It is an achievement that would be extremely difficult to match, let alone beat.
In 2010, in Gwalior, Sachin Tendulkar became the first ever cricketer to score a double hundred in an ODI innings and he bagged the record against South Africa. In the process, Tendulkar broke Pakistan batsman Saeed Anwar's long-standing ODI record of 194 that he had hit against India in Chennai, way back in 1997.
Virender Sehwag, who was Tendulkar's opening partner in the famous game against Proteas, went on to better Tendulkar's record with his knock of 219 against West Indies in Indore in December 2011.
The next two double centuries in the ODIs belonged to Mumbai batsman Rohit, who first secured the record by scoring a 209 against Australia at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore in November 2013. Exactly a year later, Rohit went on to better that by registering his still highest ODI score – 264, which came against Sri Lanka in front of a pumped up Eden Gardens crowd in Kolkata.
West Indies batsman Chris Gayle (215), New Zealand batsman Martin Guptill (237 not out), and Pakistan batsman Fakhar Zaman (210 not out) are the only other batsmen to hit double centuries.
Rohit, who recently missed India's limited-overs leg against Australia due to a hamstring injury, has been declared fit by the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and is set to join the Indian team Down Under.
