At the end of 7 weeks, 48 exhilarating games and one out-of-the-world final, the World Cup has got a new home. Eoin Morgan's England have pipped New Zealand in a nail-biting finish in the showdown at Lord's to get their hands on the cricketing world's most coveted prize. It was a moment to savour for all the fans at the iconic stadium as Jos Buttler held his nerve to run Martin Guptill of the final ball of the super over to script glory for England.

As it happened….

After scoring a modest 241 in the first innings, New Zealand accounted for Jason Roy early in the innings to stay in the hunt. The Kiwis kept the lid on England as they dismissed Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow and Eoin Morgan within a quick space of time as England were staring down the barrel at 86-4 in the 24th over. However, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler stitched a brilliant 110-run partnership to bring their team back into the game.

The hosts then lost Jos Buttler and a cluster of wickets towards the end to leave Ben Stokes with 15 runs to get off the final over. A brilliant strike over deep mid-wicket and a lucky four extra runs meant England managed to tie the game, resulting in a super over.

Taking first strike, Stokes and Buttler scored 15 runs off their 6 balls setting a target of 16 to the blackcaps to lift the World Cup. After scoring a monstrous six and stealing a couple of twos, New Zealand couldn't quite seal the deal off the last ball and lost the game to England, who scored higher boundaries in the game.

And as commentator Ian Smith exclaimed on air, it was agony and ecstasy of the highest order in sport as the two teams were left to witness contrasting emotions. While Ben Stokes and his countrymen were down in tears of joy, Williamson and co were left heartbroken and looked mired in agony.

Here's how the Twitterati reacted to this incredible game of cricket:
